The Need:
Project M.E.N.D (Mobilize, Empower, Network, and Deploy) was initiated to address the pressing issue of economic hardship among mothers in underserved communities, many of whom had children attending school without food. These women lacked stable sources of income, making it difficult to provide for their basic needs. The program team, comprising 11 trained volunteers, observed that short-term food relief was not enough. What was needed was sustainable economic empowerment. The solution? Equip women with practical vocational skills, especially sewing, to generate income and restore dignity.
The Response: The Prince Casper Foundation provided a ₦750,000 donation to support Project M.E.N.D 2.0 in February 2025. The funds enabled the purchase of sewing machines, tailoring kits, training materials, and transportation support for the women. Each woman was enrolled in a structured 3-month training program, guided by professional tailors and mentors. The project also introduced a “train-the-trainer” model: every woman trained would go on to mentor five others, multiplying the impact across multiple communities.
The Outcome: The initial cohort of women successfully completed their training and began producing school bags and other sewn items. Five women received new sewing machines and have started taking orders. The mentorship model ensures that the knowledge and skills gained will cascade to at least 60 other women before the end of the year. These women are now better positioned to support their families, and the project has already begun to reduce the dependency cycle in their communities. Project M.E.N.D 2.0 is not just about skills; it is a transformative intervention that restores purpose, income, and dignity to women often overlooked by mainstream systems.
