The Need:
Talent Mine is a free school located in Sango Ota, Ogun State, founded by Aramide Kayode. The school was established to provide free, quality education to underserved children, many of whom live on the streets or in unstable homes. With no government support, limited space, and no access to electricity or clean water, the school struggled to provide a conducive learning environment. One of the teachers, Esther Onyekwu, creatively trained her students using handmade cardboard models of computers and mice, as digital tools were unavailable. Her commitment garnered attention on social media, highlighting the school’s broader infrastructural needs, including the urgent need for a larger, permanent site.
The Response:
The Prince Casper Foundation recognized both the school’s resourcefulness and the scale of its need. To support digital learning, the Foundation provided Esther’s students with a computer, mouse, keyboard, and UPS. Furthermore, to support the school’s expansion to a larger and more permanent space, a ₦1,000,000 donation was made. The school had identified a suitable one-acre property, with a sympathetic property owner offering it at a discounted rate due to the school’s non-profit mission. The ₦1,000,000 provided by the Prince Casper Foundation was just a small fraction of the total funds used to purchase and furnish the new school property.
The Outcome:
The tech donation improved the school’s learning capacity, giving students hands-on exposure to digital tools and boosting their motivation and digital literacy. The ₦1 Million contribution also supported the goal of acquiring a permanent facility where the school can grow its enrollment from a small, overcrowded group to 2,500 children, including boarding accommodations for those living on the streets. The intervention not only addressed an urgent infrastructural gap but also validated and encouraged grassroots educational innovation. It was a significant step forward in transforming the environment into a safe, equipped, and empowering space for quality education.
